Carignane is a wine grape variety originally from Spain and France which is grown throughout the world. It is a deep red color and is generally a blending grape due to its high tannin, acidity and astrigency characteristics. It can be made into a wine in its own right, but is considered as a great blending grape due to its ability to contribute color, acidity and tannins to juice varieties that lack these desired characteristics. It is often blended with Syrah and Grenache, and is described as being peppery.
