Star anise has been used traditionally as a medicinal plant, and has a place in Chinese and Indian cuisines. It has a characteristic smell that is reminiscent of licorice, though the two taste vastly different when tasted side by side. Star anise can be used in Belgian ales with other spices, or may be used in holiday and other specialty ales. It goes well with smoked malt, and may be used in dark beers to enrich and complement the use of roasted dark malts.
