Zinfandel, also known as Primitivo, is a black-skinned variety of grape traditionally grown in Italy. It was introduced to the United States in the 19th century and is grown widely in the state of California. Zinfandel can be made into a delicious red wine, but is most famous in White Zinfandel, which is made of the same grape which has been processed in a different fashion. The flavor of the finished wine can vary widely depending on temperature and time of harvest. Flavors and aromas can range from red berry fruit and raspberry to blackberry and spicier flavors, such as pepper and anise. IT has a high sugar content which can be fermented out to produce wines that sometimes top 15% ABV. A great varietal that is underappreciated in its natural state, give Zinfandel a try!
